Venue Comments

In mid November of 1969 the State Government's new film theatre was completed in the New State Offices at 1 Macarthur Street, East Melb. It was announced (1969 Information Sheet published by the State Film Centre ) that the first screening open to the general public was to be held during the Moomba Festival, 27 February to 9 March, 1970. Prior to this State Government screenings took place at Nicholas Hall, Melbourne and according to King its head quarters were shared with RMIT at 110 Victoria Street, Carlton. The film library was stored on separate premises. Travelling showmen were also employed to take films to remote parts of the state.

Facts and figures for the year ending Dec 31 1971 include an increase in audience viewings from 220,700 to 4,869,100 (these figures are calculated by multiplying the number of films screened by the number of the audience).

In January 2002, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, at Federation Square, Melbourne was established.
