FAQs

Q - How do I perform a quick/keyword search?

A - Use the Keyword Search to find data of interest to you. Try keywords, film title, or place names. For example, a keyword search on the word blue will return all results where the word blue appears in the main body of the record.

You can filter results using the filters available on the left hand side of the search page. Check one or multiple check boxes to limit your search to type, date ranges, and location. You can also choose to search References, Comments, and Links under Additional Options. You will need to click the Apply Filters button to initiate these filters.

Q - How do I perform an advanced search?

A - Advanced search is designed for those users that wish to search beyond Keyword Search capabilities and define stricter rules around your search.

The Advanced Search allows you to broaden and narrow your search as required using single or multiple search filters. Search filters allow you to limit your results to meet a certain criteria. You can perform complex searches such as:

  • Search for cinemas in Melbourne which screened Dr Zhivago.
  • Search for any films that screened on May 28, 1975
  • Search for screenings of all versions of Ben Hur
  • You will need to specify which type of records you are querying: Venue, Films, Organisations, and Screenings. Each of these types initiate a specific set of fields you can search in the database and used together to generate the right results.

Q - How do I browse the data?

A - Browse is available on the Home page of the site. Each of the record types provide you a view of all records within that type and key attribute data associated with each record. You can sort entries by clicking on the headings at the top of each column.

    Q - What fields am I searching?

A - This depends on the type of search you are using. Keyword Search searches all records and fields in the database depending on the filters selected. If you want to include all database items in your search you will need to choose to search References, Comments, and Links under Additional Options. You will need to click the Apply Filters button to initiate these filters.

Advanced Search searches exactly what is specified by the user, right down to the exact fields and temporal constraints.

    Q - How do I improve a record?

A - If you have any feedback on any records please contact us directly at: hello[at]debverhoeven[dot]com

Q - Can I contribute my own data to CAARP?

A - Unfortunately there is nothing set up to automatically add your own data in to CAARP as mapping it to the database is a complex issue. However, we are very interested to know what data people may have out there and we will see if there is a way of incorporating it in to CAARP.

Q - How can I export my search results?

A - Under Advanced Search you can export your results as a .csv file to be used in any external program. To do this, click the Download button on the top left hand side of the results table. This will export all attributes associated with the record type.

Q - How accurate is the data?

A - Researchers have used a variety of sources to compile records in CAARP including:
Books, Journals, Newspapers (daily and community), Industry trade press and annual reports, Official records (street and telephone directories, local government records), Historical society publication and records, Materials (such as film canisters), Personal ephemera and memoirs.

The data found in CAARP is as accurate and complete to the best of our abilities and time constraints. CAARP is continually evolving and improving as more sources of data become available. Some data fields for particular entries are missing if the data is not available. If you have any feedback on any records please contact us directly at: hello[at]debverhoeven[dot]com
