"On 21 November, he (Dan Clifford) opened his tenth picture theatre on Glen Osmond Road at Eastwood. Called the Parkside Star, the building was designed by the Sydney architects, Caberry & Chard. W. Hagger built the 1,383 seat theatre and the interior design was carried out by A. Butler. The Advertiser (23 November 1923) commented on the interior: A.E. Morris, the Mayor of Unley, performed the opening ceremony. He spoke of the Clifford organisation as "doing something for the good of the people," and that "pictures were an educational force." The opening night's programme included Mord Emily (1922) and The Tiger's Claw (1923). These films were projected from the theatre's 'two new Garvie biograph picture projectors'. David Garvie was a local cinematograph manufacturer who manufactured projectors in Maud Street, Unley. The Parkside Star was the first picture theatre in Adelaide to be managed by a woman, Dan Clifford's sister, Mary. The orchestra which was a permanent feature, was conducted by Miss Reeve." D. Walker, Adelaide's Silent Nights. |
