According to Horberry (1992) the Prince Regent Theatre opened in 1927 with a seating capacity of 1,200. Prior to its opening, films were screened in the Hamilton Town Hall. Mr Patterson who operated the Town Hall theatre bought the Prince Regent and transferred his screenings there. Date unknown. Chadwick and Brown Derstan were later operators of the venue.

From May 1934, the Prince Regent had its name shortened to the "Regent'. It closed in 1974.
