The building of the Geelong Regent began in 1920. At this time the population was around 30,00 and there were four other cinemas operating (the Geelong, the Mechanics - later the Plaza, the Strand- formerly the Sun and the outdoor West Park.
The Regent was built for T.J. and A.E. Fowler, Regent Theatre Pty Ltd. It opened on December 11 1922. Regent Thetare Pty Ltd had previously operated the Mechanics and the West Park open air theatre.
The Regent opened to cinemascope in September 1956.
The Regent presented its last regular program on May 27 1964. It then opened for short irregular periods during the school holidays but was permanently closed by Jan 25 1965
