This is the original Hub Theatre in Newtown. It is now known as the Burland Hall. The present day Hub is Hub No. 2 situated on Newtown Bridge.

"The original Hub Theatre was further along King Street towards the city, where Burland Hall now stands: it was converted from a swimming baths and skating rink into a picture theatre. Clays Bridge Theatre was the former name of the theatre now called The Hub. It was owned by Harry Clay, and was claimed to be the only vaudeville theatre in Newtown. Advertisements offered patrons "a change of artists weekly" and performances every evening starting at 8.

Following World War II many Europeans of Greek, Yugoslav and other non-English-speaking backgrounds settled in the Newtown area, and The Hub was one of several cinemas in this period showing non-English language films. Subsequently, it became a venue for pornographic films and striptease shows." (Australia Street)

"It was originally called the Edward J. Hippodrome and then the Clay’s Bridge Theatre when Harry Clay took it over in 1910. It was converted into a cinema and given a makeover in the P&O;Modernist style in the early 1930s and became known as The Hub." (Sansom)
