Venue Comments

"During 1922 the Clifford empire continued to expand with the construction of the Norwood Star. Dan Clifford submitted the plans which were prepared by the Sydney architects, Caberry & Chard, to the Inspector in September 1922. A week later they were approved and work commenced under the supervision of C.A. Smith. One of the features of the picture house's interior was the parochial colours. The Register (17 May 1923) reported that the ceiling had been "constructed in eight bays of white lattice work, into which are fitted amber ceiling lights edged with the Norwood football colours."

The auditorium, which was 137 feet (42 metres) from the back wall to the back of the stage and was 76 feet (23 metres) wide, had along each side four boxes with six armchairs each. The total seating capacity of the theatre was 1,655. One of the features of the imposing structure was the incorporation of eight shops along the theatre's length fronting the Parade. The cost of the land, theatre and eight shops was a little over £20,000. The Norwood Star was officially opened by the Mayor of Norwood, W. Essery, on 16 May 1923." D. Walker, Adelaide's Silent Nights.
