Olympia Szilagyi note: spoke with Kath Tremlett who worked the ticket box during the 50s. According to her it operated as a cinema as early as 1927. It burnt down in 1937 and was re opened in 1938, screening films on Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons and evenings. Film Weekly Motion Picture Directory includes this venue in the 'Victorian Theatres and Exhibitors' list, from 1946/7 to 1958/9. E.L.F Boardman recorded as sole exhibitor. John Stoward and Tony Cordner began screening films in the Memorial Hall opening on January 13 1968. In 1970 the hall was again rented for films to Mr Bowerman. (King 2003). Both of these ventures did not last long, though operation dates are yet to be confirmed. "In 1972, Stawell Street, Sunbury was closed to traffic for a convention focused on better lifestyle concepts organised by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Following this landmark event, Stawell Street was not reopened, thus creating the Village Green, a park for public use.
