Venue Comments

"Up until 1923, the Ozone Theatre group in South Australia had mainly concentrated on utilising available halls for picture theatres around Adelaide. Their only permanent structure to this point was the Port Adelaide Ozone. 1924 saw the expansion of the Ozone chain at a time when other chains began to emerge. However, by the close of the silent era five years later, the Ozone and Star chains had survived the competition and dominated picture house ownership in the Adelaide suburbs.

The Alberton Ozone, located in Fussell Place about one hundred yards from the Alberton Railway Station, was the second picture house erected for the Ozone circuit. The plans were submitted for approval in early March and the new Ozone, which was built next door to the home of the circuit's founder, Hugh Waterman, opened to the public on 25 August 1924." D. Walker, Adelaide's Silent Nights

The cinema converted to sound on December 25 1930, using a Western Electric sound system. Its first talkie program was The Divorcee and The Gay Nineties

Note: In 1951 Hoyts purchased the theatre (and most of the Watermans circuit).

The theatre was renovated in 1952, 1955, 1956 and 1957.

Cinemascope opened on June 9 1955. Stereophonic sound was installed in 1956. The stalls foyer on one side was added in 1957.

The property sold in 1964 (became a supermarket)

Film Weekly records the following changes in seating capacity:
1946/7 = 1345
1949/50 = 1354
1956/7 = 1234
