Venue Comments

The earliest reference to a picture theatre in Mornington was found in an Argus newspaper article. It reads "The prospectus of the Mornington Theatre Limited with a capital of £12 000 has been issued. It is intended to build a picture theatre and dance palais on the Esplanade next to the State Savings Bank at a cost of £9500." (Argus Feb 26 1925, p.16)

The Plaza was purchased by Alfred Lawrence of the Lawrence Brothers Talkies in 1948 and for a time managed by Peter Wallace. In 1952 architect Gordon Murphy was employed to re-design the cinema: new carpets, curtains, Dunlopillo seats and a new name The Mathew Flinders. Closure of the Mornington Theatre in 1973 was hastened by an order from the Department of Health about an issue relating to the stability of one of the walls.
