Since its construction the theatre has had various owners and lessees, screening continuously until 1962/3. Mr Murphy ran the theatre from the 50's until 1962. It was then closed until Mr Grigg started operating the theatre on the weekends (1970-1). Cinema Record states that the theatre became a second-hand furniture store and then derelict for a number of years. However, in 2001 it was reported that two local residents had taken over the theatre had restored the facade and planned to re-open the building as a multi-purpose community centre. 'Country News' in The Argus (Nov 12 1924, p.26) references the Garfield Picture Theatre to be opened in December. Seating capacity is recorded as 500. 2001, 'Garfield Picture Theatre' Cinema Record, Iss. 33, Winter, p.6. |
