According to Catrice, theatre address was 12 Garden Street and opening date was 1912 -established in the Empress Pavilion in which the present building was constructed in 1935. Closing date recorded as 1958. (Catrice, p. 203)

Film Weekly (4 November 1954, p.1) reports the opening of Bill Blackwood's New Empress "built on the site of the old Empress Cinema, which stood there for 53 years previous to being closed down eight months ago to permit the new building to be erected...The Empress has a seating capacity of 700."
