Venue Comments

The Diamond Picture Theatre opened in July 1912. It's address was given in the paper (July 27, 1912) as Prahran, though in fact this building is listed in the St Kilda Council rate Book at this time and subsequently.
Seating capacity noted as 1,000.

According to John Davey (1986, p.7) any mention of the Diamond dissappeared after a couple of months, but re-surfaced in May 1913 as the Rex Theatre. Of note he also states that the St Kilda Council file on the Astor refers to the building "formerly known as the Rex", at the same address, and an article in the Prahran Telegraph (June 13 1914 refers to "...the Diamond Theatre, now the Rex".

Operation dates loosely based on telephone directories.
