" This large purpose -built cinema opened on April 11, 1911, commenced by Messrs Johnson and Gibson, but merged into Amalgamated Pictures by the time it was completed. It therefore has the distinction of being the first theatre built by the company, and the first in the Greater Union chain. " (Matthews, p. 7)
