According to Catrice the opening date was August 8, 1925. (Catrice, p. 203)

Opened as the New Gardenvale. Later listed as The North Brighton Gardenvale, and from 1946 renamed the Mayfair (Deutscher, p. 8). During the depression it closed for a few years before re-opening under lease to Selleck and Ward. In about 1953 Mel Elliott was brought in to manage and operate the theatre. Selleck had experience with screening European films at the Savoy and introduced this practice to the Mayfair regularly showing continental films. Final screening was on Jan. 23, 1960.
