The Empire was designed by the architect A. Barnham Black. It occupied a site 51 feet by 104 feet. Vaudeville acts along with movint pictures were presented on the opening night of 10 April 1909 and one year later, the management announced a season of pictures would be inaugurated on 4 June 1910. From that day until 1948, the theatre was used for the sole purpose of screening films. Article in the Adelaide Advertiser makes reference to Empire theatre: " The new theatre which Messrs. Lennon, Hyman, and Lennon intend to erect at Port Adelaide will be a replica of their popular Empire Theatre, in Grote-street." References |
