Built in 1922 at 294 Bay street, Brighton the cinema was originally called The Brighton Theatre. The cinema was under the control of Hoyts Theatres when it was renovated in 1932. Major renovations occurred in 1941- the cinema was called 'Hoyts Centre Brighton' at this time. Closed in 1959 and used as a warehouse for projectors and furninshings ripped out from other Hoyts cinemas. Also used as a reception room and an Op-Shop for a local church.

In 1978, 'The Centre' was purchased from Hoyts by Norman Kotzman. He converted it into a twin cinema. The Brighton Bay Twin opened in March 1981 with a foreign film policy. Later leased to Mike Walsh (local). In October 1990 the cinema was purchased by Ralph Taranto. In 2003, in conjunction with Palace Cinemas (who have leased it since 1992) over the years they have expanded the cinema to house four screen cinemas. In December 2009 Palace Cinemas opened the refurbished Cinema 2
