On the 3 May 1945 an explosion in the gas heating system took hold and a fire started at 10.15pm during an evening session where 400 people were evacuated. (Hanson, p. 20) The theatre was declared unsafe and after repairs were carried out it re-opened 8 days later on May 11.

From April 22 1962 restricted screening.
