In 1929 Union Theatres took over the theatre from the Greater Wondergraph Company. For a short time after WWWII it became known as 'The Voice of Britain' because it it screened British films exclusively. The all British film policy ended in 1952. On 9 November 1953 the Adelaide City Council purchased the York Theatre. The ACC leased the property back to York Theatre Ltd (the Waterman familty). This lease expired on 30 June 1960, and for 3 months the York was leased by Hoyts closing on 30 September. Building demolished in 1962.
