Venue Comments

The Loco Hall, North Melbourne, formerly the Loco Cinestar Theatre was sold on 11 September 1985 for $450, 000. Built in 1914 for the Locomotive Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners Association (forerunner or the Victorian Division of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Engineers) and housed the union's offices as well as the cinema.

As far as it's possible to ascertain, purchased by Damiano Galle (or sometimes spelt as Galli) in 1959. NB Damiano Galle is listed in 1959 as a baker and 'company director' in the ASIC file for the history of Carmelo Palumbo's World Film Distributors.

"(A)round 1959, it ceased showing English speaking films, but there was a large migrant population in the area and it continued on, as did many inner suburban theatres, by showing imported foreign films. A number of ethnic groups leased the Loco around this time, but business dwindled and the last films were run around 1972." (Gilbert, p. 15)
