Film Weekly (28 November 1957, p. 8) reports "It was a big night in Footscray on Thursday when the first suburban Continental movie house in Victoria - La Scala - opened its doors with a gala screening to aid the Footscray and District Hospital". Seating capacity noted as 808, the theatre also includes an espresso bar and restaurant, a Continental bookshop, a tobacco shop, six office suites and five shops.
