The Strand was a Kaberry and Chard designed cinema built for William Lang of Wollongong. The Strand came under the management of Wollongong Theatres Pty. Ltd. in 1921 but remained under the ownership of the Lang family for the full length of its operation. The building was extensively refurbished in 1937 and again in 1940 (Parkinson, 1995, p. 79).

The cinema closed in 1965, according to Parkinson (1995, p. 79), because of a decline in patronage. It was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a shopping mall and parking area.
