Royal Cine was the first cinema in Lisbon having sound pictures. This cinema was built in order to amuse and entertain the workers from Bairro Estrela d'Ouro (Golden Star District), property of an important industrialist of that time.

In the 80's, Royal was adapted as a supermarket in spite of being legally protected due to its proximity with that workers' district, which is an important memory of the industrial times.

Royal Cine was the first cinema in Lisbon having sound pictures (on April, 05th of 1930), showing "Sombras Brancas nos Mares do Sul" ("White Shadows in the South Seas" by W.S. Van Dyke). For this film, it was invited the President of Portugal and other VIPs.
