The building originally opened in 1873 and was at the time the largest Masonic complex in Victoria. "What is now the Capital was originally designed as a flat floored concert hall and ballroom, with a small platform serving as a stage and bandstand. in 1890, the land between the adjacent fire station and the existing building was purchased. as a result, the western wall was opened up, and a stage and orchestra pit were added to the existing hall. the extended facility became known in turn as the Masonic, New Britannia and the Capital (originally spelt Capitol) Theatre." Closed in 1977 after being deemed a fire risk. Page, F 1993, 'Capital Theatre, Bendigo', Kino, n.44, June, pp.20-23. |
