Venue Comments

Films were being screened from the beginning in this hall. In the thirties and forties, screenings in this hall were only held on Saturdays, except for an occasional season of two nights on a big film.

"Bert Kanzler of Albany owned the show from the early thirties at least, employing Billy Millons as operator and Roy McCallum as doorman, till at least 1939. Les Tucker came in to help Millons then took over from him as operator and worked there till he died in August 1953. Phil Smith, who had moved to Mount Barker as newsagent, was by then the manager of the picture show, which was now screening Wednesday and Saturday, with an occasional extra night on a Friday for a big film. Norman Mills came in to help Tucker as operator and took over in 1953. Both Tucker and Mills worked at the farmers co-operative in charge of the coolstores where the apples were kept, and therefore also of the power plant: till the fifties, the Shire bought electricity from them for the town. Joe and Kath Rourke of Kojonup bought the show from the Kanzler family in about 1940, and screenings continued in the hall till the drive-in opened in 1963." (Bertrand 2001)
