Venue Comments

Originally opened as the Central in 1912; first talkie screening was December 6 1930 with Sunnyside Up; changed to the Star in 1938; closed 58/59 and reopened as the Pantheon in 1962/63.
According to Harrington the final films screened at the Star on April 16 1960. They were Bedtime for Bonzo, The Marx Brothers Go West and in the evening Girls On The Loose plus Flesh and the Devil. Harrington also states that the theatre opened again briefly several months later with a two week screening of Ben Hur. It later re-opened as a Greek theatre known as the Pantheon.
A police station now occupies 60 Wakefield Street, in the area where the venue was located.

Film Weekly records the following changes in seating capacity:
1946/7 = 1550
1947/8 = 1540

Exhibitor listed as Clifford till change to Pantheon; then Cosmpolitan Theatres
