The theatre had it's first screening on April 29, 1938 and the following day the theatre was open for business. Owned and managed by the Yeoman's until the late 60's. Sold to Cosmopolitan Theatres and operated as a Greek cinema until March 1982.

The Sun Theatre, now refurbished, is still operating: "The new owners began one of Melbourne’s most popular film societies from 1998 to 2003 which encouraged them to go all out and bring the SUN back to glory. The large auditorium has been divided into 4 cinemas and another 2 cinemas have recently been added to some land at the rear." (http://www.suntheatre.com.au/history.php)

The refurbished Sun Theatre will have 5 screens seating 200, 170, 100, 70, and 60 patrons.
