The Piccadilly Picture Gardens was built in 1926. Damaged by a fire on 5 January 1928, but soon re-opened. In circa 1937, the Civic Theatre was built next door on the corner of the site, and the venue was named either the Civic and Gardens or as the Civic Theatre and Piccadilly Gardens. In 1941, the operator was Percy Tyler. This was one of the suburban venues taken over in the forties by Goldfields Pictures. Film screenings here ceased in 1962, and in 1969 the building was converted for use as a nightclub. (Bertrand 2001) References |
