The hall was built in 1903. The foundation stone was laid on 26 April 1903, by Archbishop Carr, as the Cathedral Hall. The hall was used for live shows, mainly variety, in the 1940s- reputedly shows that could not get city bookings. It was also used as a cinema at around this time, seating capacity record as 1522. In 1960, Mr Chrisodolou was using it as a cinema showing foreign dialogue film, and seating 1522. Cosmopolitan Theatres used it from the opening and closing dates record. It is now known as the Central Hall, (ACU). References Film Weekly, Film Weekly: motion picture directory, Film Weekly, Sydney. 1960/1-1971 20 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy |
