Travelling picture shows regularly exhibited film in the Eden School of Arts Hall from 1898 until 1926. In that year the hall committee leased the hall to a local consortium of businessmen for the operation of a permanent cinema, under the name of the Excelsior.

The Excelsior operated until 1965 a combination of events namely the deterioration of the building and the consequent need for costly repairs and competition from Eden Fisherman's Club which began to exhibit film on a regular basis.
