The building of the Savoy Theatre was commissioned by Wollongong Theatres to replace the company’s aging the Globe Theatre. The cinema was designed by architects Guy Crick and Bruce Furse and described as being of “Continental Modern†style (South Coast Times, Friday 4 December 1936.) The building held 1102 patrons 781 in the stalls and 321 in the gallery. The stage was fitted with a fly-tower and the theatre was regularly used for dramatic productions, choral performances and variety shows. In December 1954 the Savoy was fitted for CinemaScope, becoming the first theatre in Wollongong to do so (Parkinson 1995, pp. 34-35). In 1964 the Savoy was demolished to make way for a multi-story car-park attached to a new shopping complex owned by David Jones (Illawarra Mercury, Monday 28 September 1964).
