Venue Comments

The Pyree Mechanics Institute Hall, a humble structure built of galvanise iron became operational in 1894 and served the community playing host to a variety of communal pursuits. Between 1903 and 1920 a number of travelling picture shows companies used the venue for the exhibition of film. There is no evidence of cinematic exhibition beyond this date until 1948, when the Nowra-based Presbyterian Men’s League successfully applied for permission to screen 16mm film. The hall once again became a venue for film exhibition and movies of an educative nature were sporadically shown until 1950.
