West’s Crown Theatre was the first purpose-built cinema in Nowra. The cinema was a basic open-air wooden structure. Within two months the facility had been enclosed making it suitable for alternate entertainments such as roller skating and variety shows. The cinema remained a popular source of entertainment until 1918 when owner Frank West decided to demolish the original building and erect a more up-to-date structure on a nearby site. The (New) Crown Theatre began operation in December 1918 (Parkinson 2005, pp17 – 18). Crown Theatre / West's Theatre / West's New Crown Theatre References: |
