Films were exhibited in the Kangaroo Valley School of Arts from 1928 to 1961 although with the exception of the decade spanning the 1950s on an irregular basis only. Jack Juleff from Berry included the valley in his travelling circuit from the late 1920s. In 1928 the hall committee ran into difficulties with the licencing authorities because of failures to comply with new safety standards. As the funds needed to make the required adaptations were not available screenings appear to have been curtailed. However by 1947 the situation was remedied and Roger Tropp commenced monthly showings using a portable screen. The Presbyterian Men’s League is also known to have made use of the building at this time for the screening of 16mm films (Parkinson 2005, p. 10). In 1950 Mr E Fox from Mittagong commenced weekly screenings. Exhibition rights transferred to I. A. Barton in 1956 and in 1959 to W. D. Heddles (Film Weekly 1949 - 1961). The regular exhibition of film ceased in 1961. References: Parkinson, R. J 2005, Silver Screen in the Shoalhaven, Robert James Parkinson, Sydney. |
